Description

I'm testing 2.0 on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. The July release boots
fine for both ACPI enabled and disabled. Today, I tried the
LATEST-Release-2.0.iso.bz2 dated Sept. 4th and it hangs during boot with
ACPI enabled (ACPI disabled boots OK). Referring to the attached dmesg,
the point where it hangs is after the line "pccard0: <16-bit PCCard bus>
on cbb0". It displays the following two additional lines and then hangs:

pci_cfgintr: 0:30 INTC routed to irq 3
pcib2: routed slot 15 INTA to irq 3

Hi,

I haven't seen a particular commit to 2.0-RELEASE related to ACPI or PCI
in that time window, so if someone else comes up with an idea why recent
Release ISO hangs your computer, but not the July release, you may have
to binary search the commit by looking at the following website:

http://repo.or.cz/?p=dragonfly.git;a=log;h=refs/heads/DragonFly_RELEASE_2_0

and the commits which touched under /sys/{contrib,dev,net*} are:

I'm not sure how much delay there is between the commit and the ISO image is
finished, so you may want to try the date between two commits.

You can find ISO snapshots for 2.0-RELEASE at some of our mirror sites,
such as:
http://pub.allbsd.org/DragonFly/snapshots/i386/ISO-IMAGES/

Cheers.

Of course I meant "unless" here...

Thanks, I just downloaded the latest release iso dated 9-11-08 and it
boots fine with ACPI. Go figure. Not sure what happened with the
9-4-08 snapshot. Maybe I got a corrupt file? If so, sorry for the
false alarm.

Oops, I spoke to soon. I'm able to reproduce the bug on the 9-11 iso.
It turns out that the hang occurs if I have the laptop's power adaper
plugged in. If the laptop is on battery power, it boots fine with ACPI.
I don't remember if I had it plugged in or not when I was testing with
the July release, so that may very well have had the problem too.

If you have 2.0-RELEASE installed on your laptop, with source tree,
can you rebuild the ACPI module with attached patch applied?

Thanks.

And, before even trying the patch, please try verbose boot (boot -v)
from the boot loader and see if any additional information is displayed
on the screen before the lock-up.

does this still happen? I've reduced the battery timeout some weeks ago, so
this might have fixed it.

I will test again this weekend and let you know.

I've been able to reproduce the hang with HEAD, but it's so
unpredictable that I'm beginning to suspect a hardware problem. It
doesn't seem to matter whether the power adapter is plugged in or not.
Sometimes it hangs; sometimes it doesn't. I'd say go ahead and close
this. Also, I'm now seeing acd0: illegal inquiry request on boot, but
I gather from reading the list that this is just noise.

If the system hangs, does it stay there for hours, or does it proceed at some point?

Could you maybe obtain a kernel dump when the system hangs? For this you need
to specify a dumpdev in loader.conf and break to the debugger.

I tested again tonight and it stays hung for hours. I'll try to get
the kernel dump, but it will have to wait until I return from a week

I think this one can be closed. I'm almost certain that the problem was
faulty hardware.

Closing. But just FYI, I've seen similar problems as well and BIOS update
fixed all these at some point.
