Description
What Dragonfly BSD desperately needs is a standard GUI, based around X,
of course. It would make the whole thing a lot easier. I would suggest
something akin to QNX's Photon or Athene's Indigo, using FVWM as a
basis.

What's wrong with the choice between several GUIs? Why does DragonFly need a
standard GUI? And what are the criterias to select one?
Or do you want to have a GUI on the live/installation CD?

Well, putting a GUI on the Live CD would create a de facto default GUI.
In any case, I'd also like to have a X environment on the Live CD. We're
modernizing the rest of the system; the interface should at least be up to
date with, say, 1995.

IMHO, it would be a GUI for the installer/the live CD, but you could give the
user a choice in a graphical installer, which DE he wants to install, e. g.
KDE, GNOME, GNUStep.

Yes, I agree ;-)

Understandable - but please make sure it is possible to boot the
thing without starting an X environment, I can think of many cases where a
live CD is useful that I really don't want a GUI on.

Argh! Please NO don't go there.
OK that's the emotional bit over, you can guess my personal opinion
is that a standard GUI is a bad idea. I like having a choice in GUIs and I
made my choice several years ago and I know that it is not one of the more
popular options (ie. not Gnome, KDE, NextStep, fvwm or box) but it *is
the one that I like.
What I'm saying is that choosing a GUI is as personal as choosing
an editor. I think the BSDs go far enough by providing pre-built packages
for the most popular desktop environments (even if I wouldn't touch any of
them with a bargepole).

IMHO, putting a GUI on a live CD will just make it more big and heavy.
There are many cases when one may need no GUI but need a rather modern
but good, fast and stable system. For the server machine or for hardware
diagnostic system any GUI will just be a useless ballast.

I concur with that. If somebody wants to make a nice install/live CD
with GUI and whatnot, please go ahead! But I think this should not be
the official DragonFly CD. Our nrelease framework and the installer is
so flexible, it is very easy to have additional packages and configs
added for an "advanced GUI CD"
