Bug #510
closedDEV 12/30 Boot fail
0%
Description
Latest DEV ISO (12/30/06) fails to boot on my fairly new Dell
Optiplex 745. I tried with and without ACPI. Kernel gets fairly far
then stops completely with the following message:
ATA3 Slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded
I suspect it is more of a hardware problem than DF but just thought
I'd let know. Will be happy to help if would like.

A follow up.
Setting the BIOS to "Legacy" SATA settings allowed DFB to bootup a
little further but giving more error messages. Then disabling ACPI
when booting DF got DF to fully boot.
The default BIOS setting of "Normal" allows for better speed but
seems to map the IDE/SATA devices as SCSI. "Legacy" setting puts them
back as straight IDE. Or something.
I got this hint reading Pupply Linux forums. I have d/l'ed a few
LiveCD lately and about half of them booted and half didn't. For the
ones that didn't (like Puppy) I went searching in their forums.
Apparently some linux distros are able to handle the latest chipsets
without change, others aren't. Like DF.

Could you mention the chip used? I suspect it's an AHCI part, which can
operate in AHCI mode or legacy-IDE. AHCI is supported by NATA, but NATA
isn't yet ready for prime-time.

Yup, that's an AHCI part. Old-ATA doesn't support AHCI, so you'll have
to use the legacy mode.

Does it work with nata(4)? Can we close this issue?

Close for now.
The original poster confirms that the box boots (albeit with ACPI turned off),
so it doesn't seem to be a ata/nata issue.
