This is fishy, even though it is coming from FreeBSD. The whole .private
access should be cleaned up and not hacked around. IIRC I started some
cleanup by introducing accessor macros, but never finished it due to the
unclear future of NetGraph, the nastiness involved e.g. with arpcom and
other developers more willing to work in this area.
