Got this today when I rebooted:

I'm seeing the same behavior with my vkernel-mp work. Often the
vkernel hangs and is unkillable leaving the processes around until I
reboot and I see these messages. I haven't seen them otherwise and
rebooting succeeds without intervention.

You should always be able to kill -9 a vkernel. Can you gdb it when
it is in that state?

I run it from gdb to start with and when I try to kill it via gdb it
hangs.

This kinda sounds like a bad interaction between gdb and the vkernel.
Try running the vkernel normally, without gdb. Get it to hang while
halting, and see if you can kill -9 the vkernel process(es) from another
xterm.

I managed to get a vkernel to hang and cannot kill -9 it. I attached

Ok, I think its related to the threading. Could you email me your
current patch set and the tests you are running that get the vkernel
into its unkillable state? I'll try to reproduce it and track the
problem down.
How far into the boot sequence is your threaded vkernel getting now?
If its getting to init then I have to get the multi-threaded VMSPACE_*
support working (else things will explode).

I'm still not having any luck reproducing it, but I'm still trying.
Try unmounting procfs and linprocfs manually without -f and see
if it complains about any of them.
I know there are issues in this area, its just a matter of figuring
out what is causing the hanging refs.

I tried unmounting both procfs and linprocfs with the same results. I
also edited fstab and got rid of everything except / and swap. When I did
that, I still got the "Forced unmount" messages, but only got 2 instead
of 4. Does that help?

Ok, I'm not sure what is going on with the buttons. But lets try
to get some additional information on the forced unmounts. I don't
like the fact that 14 processes seem to be stuck.
Lets try to get a good kernel core for this condition. Here's a patch
which will hopefully print out which mount(s) are having problems, and
will also panic the system when it hits a mount with more then 12
process references (the idea being to try to get a snapshot of the
kernel when its in this situation that can then be kgdb'd).
Once you get a good kernel core, remove the panic.
I have a feeling that the freeze is due to the mount confusion and not
ACPI, but I could be wrong.

When I was doing some testing I noticed that if I only mount / (ufs) then
I only get 2 warnings. So the 4 warning are actually 2 from each ufs mount.
Not sure if that helps...I'll try the patch.

Oh, and it still freezes with ACPI disabled, so I'd agree that it's a
mount problem and not acpi.

They are stuck in accept() and the accept() is marked as being
uninterruptable.
Oh! Oh my. WTF. It's a bug in the network stack. The local
unix domain sockets are using sync_soport() when they really
should not be.
It was an optimization that went a little too far. sync_soport()
calls the dispatch function in the context of the caller rather
then using a protocol thread, but it also waits for the message
to complete and passes a flags value of 0 (i.e. tells it to ignore
signals) when it shouldn't.
I'll be able to get this fixed today, definitely.

Ok, netisr.c rev 1.35 should fix the problem of php processes getting
stuck on shutdown.
Lets see if that fixes your freeze too.

No more forced unmounts...Cool.
Unfortunately, it still freezes after the Uptime: message. I've tried this
with and without ACPI.
Any other ideas?

I think so :-).
Start adding kprintf()'s to the kernel in the code paths after the
Uptime message is printed. In paricular, the device shutdown
path (device_shutdown() line 1198 in kern/subr_bus.c). Also boot
with verbose mode so the shutdown is verbose too.
Now that we've gotten one issue out of the way at least, is it
possible to break into the debugger after it freezes or is that still
a no go?
Another thing to try, drop into single user by killing init
i.e. 'kill 1', do a ps to make sure everything has been killed
(the only user processes left should be init, -sh, and your ps),
and then see if a reboot freezes the system.
It's got to be something stupid simple. Literally. The shutdown
got through all the hard stuff already. It's like it can't reset
the cpu or something.

No workie.
Indeed, only kernel threads and init, sh, and ps, but a reboot still freezes
after "Uptime: xxxx"
BTW, with verbose logging, that's where I was getting the acpi_button
messages from.

I got this once or twice somewhere along the lines,
but not reproducibly so, so I've been silent.
do get the occasional:
unmount(0xd9f157c0): Forced unmount: 0 namecache references still present
kinds of things however, but overall, reboot / shutdown tends to work.
affected systems (as I recall) are mostly 'bare',
but do use lots of "nfs -o tcp" mounts via amd..
perhaps this might interact with the sockets you were mentioning ?
(in the netisr.c diff grok attempt, lacking my ip-stack-foo was)

At first I thought it's in cpu_reset(), but since you didn't see
"Rebooting...", it's stuck in one of event handlers for shutdown_post_sync
and not managed to shutdown_reset(). Please try attached patch to
find which handler is the culprit. Note that you may have to rebuild
modules too, since this patches makes some incompatible changes to
EVENTHANDLER_* APIs.

Duh, I forgot including the change to kern_shutdown.c. Can you insert
"eventhandler_show_invoked_funcs = 1;" somewhere just before the call
to EVENTHANDLER_INVOKE(shutdown_post_sync, howto) ?

Doh! A little matter of dashutdown being called after ahd_shutdown
instead of before!

I've changed the priorities around. Please update to HEAD with the
new sys/eventhandler.h and driver code updates (in particular ahd)
and test again.
