After installing recent snapshots and installing Xorg the system mouse does not
work in Xorg.

After a few hours of messing about, I found a xorg.conf file had been installed,
removing it restored Xorg's ability to auto-detect and correctly configure the
mouse.

This affects a Lenovo X301 2009 model machine, no idea about other machines..

No, I believe the xorg.conf file comes from our install image as it is normally
part of the live cd stuff unless I am mistaken.

The CD doesn't have any X stuff. Only the GUI DVD has.

I installed off the latest^[1] snapshot iso.bz which when decompressed fits on a
CD. I am pretty sure this is not the DVD GUI iso.

Top of the file says:
"# $DragonFly: src/nrelease/gui/etc/X11/xorg.conf,v 1.2 2008/09/01 21:20:30
swildner Exp $"

So it is indeed being copied, most likely unintentionally.
